October Half Term Exam Q
Question 1
In video clip A, editing is used to create a fast-paced and upbeat trailer. One way this has been done is with cuts. These are used to make a quick transition from one shot to another, therefore allowing as many shots as possible to be included. It also keeps the footage moving at the same pace as the music, because shots can be short or slightly longer depending on the beat of the non-diegetic sound, without being slowed down by a fade or pan.
Another example of editing in this clip is non diegetic sound. The music used is quite bouncy and upbeat which creates a positive mood for the audience. The positive phrase ‘Yes I Can’ is repeated in the lyrics which motivates the audience and the Paralympians and makes them believe that they can do anything as well. Without the non diegetic sound the trailer would be open to mockery because an audience can create their own, uninfluenced, interpretation. Also, a melancholy soundtrack would have a negative impact and give the impression that Paralympians cannot achieve anything because of their disability.
Question 3
Question 4
In image 1 the characters are staged to convey the idea that gender does not matter but species does. There are four characters in this image, two of them are vampires and the other two are humans. There is one female and one male for each species, but the vampires are holding the humans who have passed out. This staging shows the dominant ideology of males in control and the female being the damsel in distress, but also contrasts this idea with the female vampire holding the male human. It presents a clear representation of a vampire’s power over humans to the audience and could gain some positive feedback for showing equality with regards to gender.
Question 5
In clip B low angles are used to show the soldiers hiding from gunfire and the planes above them. The planes are shown to suggest that there is nowhere safe to hide, despite the soldiers being able to avoid gunfire. This makes the game more realistic and true to history, whilst also being action packed so an audience will be more intrigued. The realism will also prevent any negative feedback from real soldiers who fought during the war. The angle from which the player can see the planes is particularly low, and could potentially be ground level. This is to show how low the planes are and how easy it is for them to drop a bomb in the right place. It also creates a feeling of tension for the player as they wait for the bombs to be dropped. This angle builds up suspense for the player because they can see the danger coming, but there’s no way to indefinitely avoid it.
Another example of camerawork and realism in this trailer is the use of mid shots and close ups. This conveys to the audience how close the soldiers were to each other, mentally and physically. It also allows the audience to see the soldier’s reactions to what is happening around them. Therefore the player can feel closer to the characters and this creates a better gaming experience.
Question 6
Females are often presented for the pleasure of males in the media. Stuart Hall’s theory on Re-presentation suggests that all media representations are constructed and mediated and all are influenced by ideologies. An example of this is a Vogue Magazine cover featuring Hailey Bieber. Despite wearing a big coat a lot of skin is exposed on her left side, showing her shoulder and her upper chest/neck. The jacket is not supposed to be worn this way but Vogue have chosen to have Hailey wear it this way to attract attention. This has been done purposely to catch the males’ attention because she is exposing parts of her body for them to look at freely on a magazine cover. This ideology of females being something for men to look at links to Laura Mulvey’s ‘Male Gaze’ theory. Mulvey’s theory implies that women within the media are positioned in order to satisfy the male desire. Her belief is that the camera is from the male point of view and is for male sexual gratification. On this magazine cover the exposed skin conveys that this is to grab the males’ attention because a female would, stereotypically, only question why she isn’t wearing the coat correctly. However for any audience their attention immediately goes to the models’ skin. The male gaze in particular is for sexual gratification and this is what the company is wanting to achieve, because any other possible reactions could be disgust, confusion or just a lack of interest. Either way the focus of this cover is the costume and any other parts of mise-en-scene are less significant. This implies that the cover is seeking male attention because the female’s body is the main focus. The lighting is bright but minimal to make it seem less important than the model and the setting is blurred for the same effect.
